"Our time could be (..) understood as the age of the space.

We live in the age of simultaneity, of lining up, of closeness

and distance, and the juxtaposition and distraction "

Michael Foucault

Space, as well as time, belongs to our everyday live. It is felt and experienced rather than understood, perceived as undetermined rather than clear bounded.  Ever since the change of paradigm brought about by the Spatial Turn, subject of space evokes a powerful discourse in the art theory, whereas in practice, perception of space is increasingly questioned in artistic work. This space curiosity can easily be observed by the dynamic mobility of artists which could be interpreted as a search for an inspiring space to live and work. In this context, the artist residency is becoming a unique form for spatial experience. It gives artists a free space to work, it facilitates a change of perspective, offers a different surrounding, new social relations and a network. Contemporary artists` practice is, in spite of the global context of art works, tied to local peculiarities. The interrelation of artists with the new location provokes artistic reflection on new environment and thereby enhances the value of the space itself and for the local community. LIA residents from different countries lived and worked for several months in the Spinnerei. Now it is up to the visitors if they find the echo of location Leipzig in the artist´s works. The international awardees are open for discussion. (text: Kristina Semenova)

We thank LIA main partner BMW and the Cultural Office of the City of Leipzig as well as the Embassy of Slovenia Berlin, the Australia Council for the Arts and Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs for their kind support.
