-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Space Lab: Artist Residence, Exhibition, Discussion in context of the international MitOst Festival 2013 10th - 19th October, Leipzig ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Opening and Performance 10th October 5pm, Spinnerei Hall 18, 3rd floor, opening speech by Bertram Schulze (Director of Spinnerei) and Darius Polok (Head of MitOst e.V.) 6 pm guided tour with the curators Guided Tours during the festival and by appointment: 11th and 12th October at 11am, 1pm, 3pm (English/German/Russian), meeting point: Infopoint // exhibition is open from 10th till 19th October and is free accessible with the map The old cotton-spinning mill is celebrated as a stronghold of contemporary painting till today and is an example for the contemporary artistic development in Leipzig. Once a factory at the suburb, then partially occupied area, the Spinnerei has become an economically successful place for art. However, its position is often questioned in the artistic scene of Leipzig. The parcours of visitors seem to be defined what at the first sight wakes the impression, that the area is well developed. The project Space LAB offers alternative ways through the area and tries to explore a new the established place.
During their stay in Leipzig 16 international artists dealt with space and history of Spinnerei and developed site-specific works for the places of the factory, proposed by curators. The connection of premises creates a tension field between the known and the unknown, the private and the public. Art Interventions of Space LAB question the normality of the culture industry and create "as-if situations” that reverse common thought and action structures. For the first time the whole area becomes an exibition space which condenses in the newly designed map.
