Inez de Brauw lives and works in Amsterdam. She received her BFA with honours at HKU Utrecht in 2014. She has participated in multiple residencies, including the Vermont Studio Center (2023), EKWC (2022), and Rijksakademie van beeldende Kunsten (2016-2017). Her exhibitions include Unfair Amsterdam (2023), ‘Home is where the art is’ Kunsthal Rotterdam (2022), ‘Thuis’ in the Kunsthal of Kunstlinie Almere (2021), ‘On Sight’ in 38CC in Delft (2020), and ‘Lost and Found in Paradise’ by ARTUNER in Paris (2019). De Brauw won the NN Public Art Award in 2022 and was nominated for other awards, including the Royal Award for Modern Painting (NL) in 2018. The Mondriaan Fund kindly supports De Brauw’s participation in LIA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inez de Brauw’s work exhibits a fascination with the objectification of time-bound discourses. Her current paintings are inspired by contemporary model houses and interiors taken from lifestyle magazines; these interior photos echo and amplify our desires. These pictures influence our desires: the photos copy life by studying our wishes and behaviour. Consequently, life is copying the photos. As such, the paintings become a framework reflecting the continued migration of ideas and forms from magazines to real life, back into magazines, in an endless mirroring of historical forms and their imitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De Brauw’s technique furthers the idea of constant migration and transformation through trends. De Brauw paints primarily on polyptychs and encourages the viewer to reorganise the panels to create a new painting. She searches for materials that imply further transformation, such as the ancient technique of “ebru” (water marbling), plaster, and supplementary materials, such as black threads to guide painted lines and self-made lenticular lenses. De Brauw fills her paintings with these contradictions and repetitions to create a dreamlike “mise-en-abyme” while exploring the relationship between desire, representation, and reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
