Annina Roescheisen (born 1982, Rosenheim, Germany) is a German-Slovenian artist based in New York. Painting and drawing are at the center of her practice; at the same time, she works with sculpture, installation, video, photography, and performance. Roescheisen explores the nature of perception and aesthetic experience and examines the transitions between polarities such as dream and reality, the visible and the invisible, the audible and the inaudible. Her works open up a field of experience in which the frequencies of color and their transcendent effect on physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels can be experienced. Drawing on religious iconography, poetry, literature, bestiaries, spiritual philosophy, and nature mysticism, Roescheisen translates her Northern European cultural heritage\u2014German Romanticism, transcendentalism, Gothic architecture, Nordic shamanism, myths, and fairy tales\u2014 into her art. Her work encapsulates humanity\u2019s enduring fascination with the occult and the supernatural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Using alchemical mixtures of pigments and minerals, Roescheisen intuitively shapes and structures elements on the canvas. The resulting images point to an intimate connection and performative immersion between the artist\u2019s body and the creative process. This reveals resonances with the transformative and transcendent aspirations of postwar art. While John Cage and Pat Steir drew their spiritual inspiration from Buddhism, for example, and Eva Hesse from her Jewish heritage, Roescheisen draws on a variety of wisdom traditions in her practice. Her recent series *Vibrational Strings* (2019\u20132021), *Flying Dragons* (2020\u20132022), and her ongoing body of work incorporate metaphysical and mathematical codes that explore the deep connections between the visible and the invisible, the tangible and the spiritual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Performance plays a central role in the creation and conception of Roescheisen\u2019s work. The works bear the traces of embodied action\u2014ritualized, extended in time, and anchored in movement. Like the artists of the Gutai Group, particularly Shiraga, who used his entire body as an instrument, Roescheisen activates the canvas through direct physical engagement. Through her art, Roescheisen explores universal existential questions and the multifaceted interplay between art and consciousness. Her works encourage introspection and open our eyes to the mystery of existence as well as to our own spirituality. Roescheisen invites us to perceive the world beyond the limits of our senses\u2014beyond audible frequencies and the light visible to our eyes, and beyond those energies that go beyond the tactile capabilities of the skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Roescheisen\u2019s work has been featured in solo exhibitions at galleries in Europe and the United States. Selected solo and group exhibitions include Modern Fine Art, New York (2025); Waterhouse & Dodd, New York (2023); KeiAkei, Montreal (2023); Leica Gallery, Los Angeles (2022); amfAR Auction Gala, Simon de Pury, Los Angeles (2022); Boogie Wall Gallery, London (2022); Athenessa Gallery, Los Angeles (2021). She has participated in group exhibitions such as the 56th Venice Biennale (2015) and Salon Berlin at the Museum Frieder Burda (2019). From 2012 to 2019, she was a regular performer in *Systema Occam* by contemporary artist Xavier Veilhan, which was presented at venues including the Mus\u00e9e Delacroix and the Fondation Herm\u00e8s in Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
