Nefer (Rabia Namuquita, born 2002) is a visual artist from Maputo, Mozambique. Fascinated by creativity and art since childhood, she formally began her artistic practice in 2024. She holds a degree in Architecture and Urban Planning from ISCTEM – Instituto Superior de Ciências e Tecnologia de Moçambique. Nefer believes she exists somewhere along the spectrum between being an artist and being art itself. The way she exists, thinks, expresses herself and presents herself to the world is an integral part of her artistic practice. Her creative process begins long before the brush touches the canvas. It emerges through the senses and the way she listens to, touches, smells and absorbs the world around her. Her practice focuses primarily on painting and poetic writing.
Working mainly with acrylic paint, she incorporates organic and recycled materials such as sand, charcoal, fabric, plastic bottles, and sisal and raffia fibres. These materials allow her to explore texture and create works that engage the viewer in a visual and sensory experience. Texture plays a central role in her practice, shaping how we perceive and experience the world around us. Her work explores themes of affective memory, the reclamation of African and Mozambican cultural heritage, identity, and the reimagining of being and femininity. Through her art, Nefer seeks to encourage a return to one’s essence, free from external pressures and expectations about who one should be. Her practice is an ongoing exploration of identity, self-discovery and the freedom to exist beyond imposed definitions.
