Leipzig
Papua New Guinea artist Gazellah Bruder joined the LIA residency programme from August to October 2025, thanks to the support of the Foreign Federal Office and its research programme on Germany`s colonial past. We are grateful to her gift to the GRASSI Museum, leaving her trace for the Leipzig public. We would like to cordially invite you to the opening of WanBel – 50 years of independence – Papua New Guinea and thank the GRASSI Museum sincerely for this inspiring cooperation.
Papua New Guinea gained independence in September 1975. Fifty years later,
the country is celebrating this historic anniversary with numerous cultural
initiatives worldwide. WanBel is one of these projects: a global
alliance of partner institutions. Over 40 museums in 14 countries
are participating, including the GRASSI Museum of Ethnology in
Leipzig with its significant collection. A special presentation focuses on
cultural artifacts from the Papua Gulf, the
Sepik River region, and the Bismarck Archipelago.
The opening will be accompanied by a digital painting performance
by artist Gazellah Bruder and will provide an opportunity for exchange and
discussion in the exhibition.
We look forward to seeing you there.
