“For over sixteen years, my artwork has been created using Vietnamese traditional handmade Dó paper. I use this paper to create large scale sculptural installations, which is a departure from the traditional use of Dó paper in Vietnamese art. This paper is, made from the bark of the Dó tree, used to make woodcut folk prints called Đông Hồ. This type of folk print is believed to have existed since the 11th century.

My philosophy is that all things are always in a state of flux, either evolving or devolving. As a human being our body and mind are forever changing. The body is subject to growth and decline, while the mind is constructed and deconstructed. Living things, when they die return to their basic building blocks, such as dirt, water, air, ect. All of which will help generate and support other life. The universe is forming and at the same time dissipating. Nothingness is not a void but instead alive with possibility. New things emerge from nothingness.

My practice culminates in an expression that all things are always in a state of flux, either evolving or devolving. The work is either in the state of being made by the artist or in a state of being unmade by nature. But at the same time, we can’t really determine by casual observation whether the work is in the evolving or devolving mode. This is the core of my practice.”
