Douglas Stichbury

working primarily in drawing and painting, Stichbury’s work focuses on the modern relationship between individuals and larger institutional bodies. With the intensification of network structures organisations have become increasingly opaque; the operations through which decisions that relate to everyday life are made are often hidden or invisible, taking place in unknown spaces and carried out by anonymous individuals. Relative to this, Stichbury creates work that attempts to reflect on these events.

Originally from New Zealand, Stichbury received a MFA with Distinction from Massey University and has held residencies in Switzerland, Germany, China, New Zealand, Austria, Hong Kong and Hungary. Currently he is based between Wellington and New York City. In 2014 he won New Zealand’s Parkin Prize for contemporary drawing.
