LIA in Johannesburg

On 15 April, The Centre for the Less Good Idea will host African Leipzig, an exhibition of etchings at The Less Good Lounge, Arts on Main, Johannesburg.

The exhibition, which features 20 etchings made by artists across Africa and Germany, emerges from the ‘African Leipzig’ residency programme and will be followed by the screening of a film documenting the artists’ process in residence.

Commenced in February 2022 and concluded in January 2023, African Leipzig is a project between The Centre, David Krut Projects, and LIA-Leipzig International Art Programme which saw 10 multidisciplinary African artists (nine from South Africa and one from Addis Ababa) in residence in Leipzig, Germany for three months each. They were supported by ten German artists. Each artist spent three months in studios on the old spinning mill site in Leipzig,  Spinnerei

The etchings exhibited in African Leipzig bear the markings, gestures and reflections of the 20 artists who took part in the residency programme.

This project was made possible with the kind support of the German Federal Foreign Office.
