Colin Crotty

born in Waterford, Ireland 1974 and currently lives in Dublin. Colin Crotty studied an MA in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art London and BA Fine Art at Crawford College of Art & Design Cork, Ireland. Also teaches Fine Art at Crawford College of Art & Design, Cork.

The role of memory and perception is central to Crotty’s work. Found imagery sourced from books, documentary film and the internet, become detached from their original meaning and are re-interpreted to create a disjointed narrative. In layering images and representations from diverse sources, unspecific places and varied generations, a fictional scenario is created but one which is ingrained in collective consciousness. This coming together of people from unspecific locations represents a sense of the duration and conviction of a ‘groups’ ideal. Yet lingering there is also an assertion of a collective commitment between individuals to form a doctrine of some form, to lead or forge forward. However, the uncertainty that exists between these people and their specific location, reflects an awareness of doubt and misjustices that have taken place.
